Before you apply, it’s a good to quickly check you’re eligible to become a driving instructor. You don’t need any formal qualifications, but the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) insists you will need:

• A full or European Union/ European Area unrestricted car driving licence which has been held for at least 4 years.

• To have not been disqualified from driving at any time in the four years before you train.

• The ability to read a car number plate at a distance of 27.5 meters (90 feet).

Any motoring or non-motoring convictions will be taken into account when you’re assessed for inclusion on the Register. You’ll also need an enhanced level Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check (as from Spring 2007).
